Geschichte der Mathematik

Geschichte der Mathematik (2020)

“Geschichte der Mathematik” (2020) is a serious game created as a solo project for a high-school course. Its educational goal is to teach learners about the history of mathematics, with a focus on fractions in Ancient Egypt. The game combines practice of already learned fraction skills with historical context. To make problem-solving more engaging, it uses authentic Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs for numerals: the game first explains which hieroglyph corresponds to which number, and after that the player sees hieroglyphs only, solving the math tasks without Arabic numerals. In addition, the game provides extra historical facts to enrich the player’s knowledge about Ancient Egypt.

From a game-studies perspective, the project demonstrates how subject-matter learning can be strengthened through thematic design. By embedding fraction learning within an Egyptian framework and translating key mathematical notation into historically grounded symbols, the game supports motivation and accessibility while connecting mathematical concepts to cultural context.
